Before Booster Shot Comics, Gary and I were part of LIVE ACTION CARTOONISTS,  a theater company that combined live drawing, comics, music, video and performance.

Our first performance was in Chicago in 2002, and over the years we did shows both nationally and internationally (well in that converted Japanese prison in Taipei that one time).

Being a Live Action Cartoonist was truly a life-shaping experience for me.  I learned a few important lessons in my time with LAC.

The power of comics goes well beyond the printed page

There is something truly magical about watching someone draw in person.  The information that can be conveyed in those moments has the ability to deeply connect with the viewer

Creating art does not have to be a solitary pursuit. When you collaborate with others (especially talented friends who can do things you have no chance of being able to do yourself), you can create amazing work together.

Years after our LAC days, it were these lessons that inspired Gary and I to partner-up and create Booster Shot Media.  We actually made this decision at LAC director Natsu Onoda's wedding!

After LAC, we moved to different cities and pursued our varied careers.  In that time, the 4 of us have often mused about how fun it would be to do something together again.  It has always been great to visit each other and hang out as friendsies, but nothing beats MAKING SOMETHING AWESOME together.

Well, after an 11 year hiatus, the stars have aligned and we have that chance. LIVE ACTION CARTOONISTS are REUNITING!

We were invited by Life Matters Media to participate in National Healthcare Decisions Day on Monday April 16th by creating a site-specific mural in the middle the 17-story Atrium of the James R. Thompson Center.  The purpose of National Healthcare Decisions Day is to to inspire, educate and empower the public and healthcare providers about the importance of advance care planning.

The plan is for us to create an improvised mural in real-time based on answers to questions we provide the public at the Atrium.  The basic concept is to create a 24 ft mural that, depending  on what angle you are viewing it, reveals different images depicting the seasons of the year.  We want viewers to think about their lives in that context.  What season of your life are you in now?  What are your fondest memories of the seasons past?  What are your hopes, dreams, concerns for the seasons ahead? How would you define "living well" through the seasons?  With these answers, we hope to create a collaborative mural that creates a story of the seasons, a story of our lives.

Whew.  Also we have 4 hours to do it.

It's going to be an exciting day. If you're in the Chicagoland area, we hope you can join us at The Atrium at the Thompson Center between 11am and 2pm on April 16 to add your contribution to the latest LIVE ACTION ART PROJECT.

hope to see you there!
